Kaspersky says it could have security software for Mac ready in days
March 6, 2008
Timur Tsoriev, of Russian security vendor Kaspersky, announced at CeBIT show in Germany, that it’s anti-virus software can “be ready in days” for Mac. Hackers have traditionally left Mac alone, but security analysts and vendors are forecasting this won’t last as Apple’s OS X market share increases for 3 months in a row. “We see that Mac OS is taking a bigger and bigger share of the market,” Kaspersky said. “We made the prototype to be ready just in case.” Kaspersky has tested a version of its software designed specifically for the iPhone.
F-Secure, AVG, and Dr. Web, all have been doing some research with their software on Mac. Since the risk of infection is much lower in a Mac, security companies are cautious about investing in an unprofitable venture. Symantec, McAfee, Intego, and Sophos are currently the only four companies with a fully functional anti-virus program for the Mac OS.
