Finjan uncovers hijacked PC network
by Alan Harten
Finjan Inc, which specialises in security on the web, particularly as a provider of solutions and products, announced today that its Malicious Code Research Centre detected and researched a trade network that operates from a botnet to sell compromised computers for profit.
The security threat was published in the second issue of the company’s 2009 “Cybercrime Intelligence Report”, when it was exposed as the Golden Cash network, which careful traded PCs that were already infested with malicious malware designed to be used for cybercrime purposes.
The company maximises profits by selling the rights to use the compromised computers to those interested in cybercrime opportunities, after they make the initial revenue from selling the infected PC to a consumer.
Even worse, the study found that each time the PCs are sold to a different cybercrime purchaser to be used as a host computer, additional malware was usually added on increasing the danger of each infected computer.
Finjan also announced that The US Patent and Trademark Office has terminated proceedings to re-examine the patent that would protect computers and networks from downloads that may have hostile intents.
According to the Patent agency, the patent is confirmed and ready to be obtained now without any further consideration.
Chief Technology Officer Yval Ben-Itzhak of Finjan said that the company is glad to hear that the gateway security patent is now officially granted to Finjan which will help secure its reputation as one of the leaders of web security throughout the market.
Ben-Itzhak went on to say that the acquisition of the patent rights will allow Finjan to continue to support and protect its intellectual property on a global scale.
